Was bleibt uns als Konsumenten?

Reflection: Coal, Energy Transition and Global Responsibility

The Bitter Aftertaste of the Energy Transition

Yesterday, I watched a documentary about Colombia and the vast coal mining areas. The urgent question arises: For whom is this coal produced? The first search result is sobering: Germany. While we are saying goodbye to Russian gas and nuclear power, we are increasingly importing coal from Colombia – coal whose extraction goes hand in hand with water scarcity and human rights violations in an already suffering region. The fact that a Swiss corporation like Glencore is profiting massively from this only makes the hypocrisy of this system even clearer.

The Complex Reality of Consumption

It is easy to be angry, but the German coal phase-out is a necessary but incomplete process. We continue to use fossil fuels because the infrastructure for an immediate stop is missing. In 2023, 16 percent of our coal imports came from Colombia, with the rest primarily from the USA and South Africa. Even though coal-based power in Germany is falling to a historic low, we still cover nearly a quarter of our electricity needs from it. Furthermore, the products we import daily – especially from China – indirectly hide large amounts of coal consumption for the steel and heavy industries.

Future Plans: Green Hydrogen Instead of Coal?

Germany and Colombia have entered into a „Partnership for a Just Energy Transition.“ The goal: After the coal phase-out (in the El Cerrejón mine by 2034), the focus is to shift to green hydrogen. But critical questions arise here: Why isn’t this production being pushed forward within Germany itself? The transport routes and the conversion into ammonia carry further ecological risks. It seems as if we are simply extending old, post-colonial structures of extractivism into a „green“ future.

Acting as Responsible Citizens

What remains for us as consumers? The lever exists, but it is demanding. More conscious consumption, avoiding products from global supply chains that are ecologically and socially destructive, is a start. Politically, we must exert pressure to ensure that supply chain laws are extended to the financial sector. And perhaps the idea of calculating compensation measures (such as animal bridges for fragmented landscapes) directly into product prices is the only way to make the truth of our consumption visible.
