The Forest Saver – Forester Allgeier from Waldshut Takes Action
A piece of forest at the southern edge, particularly hard hit by the drought â the forester has to fight.
Forester: „I wouldn’t say I’ve ended up in ruins, but these ruins are currently being created. It is no reason for me to say that everything is lost here.“
Narrator: Climate change is here, and the forest must be rethought. The forester’s main task at the moment: damage control.
Forester: „I haven’t experienced such beetle situations, such exceptional situations before. Recently, such beetle calamities haven’t occurred either. The conditions are now completely different than before.“
Narrator: He advises private owners who are currently losing everything.
Affected Forest Owner: „I have already planted trees, but they have dried up again. I don’t even know what I should do.“
Narrator: The forester advises letting the forest rejuvenate itself. That means accepting what the forest lets grow back. However, that takes at least a generation.
Forester: „At the beginning of the year, I was of the opinion that we could manage it. If I see the development now â which is also connected to the mild winter â, the beetle is eating its way up to 1400m.“
Narrator: The beetle is already flying for a second time. Due to the drought, the spruces are weakened. A disaster.
Forester: „The spruce is practically suffocating from the presence of the beetle. They are cutting off its air supply.“
Narrator: Forest ownership is a multi-generational project. Possibly, the family’s son will experience a healthy forest again. A small comfort for the family that has lived with the forest for centuries.
Forester: „Look out for the sycamore maple when you are logging now. You have to understand the people very well, and I think that is the crucial point. As a new colleague, I cannot come and say that I am the greatest. I must understand people, I must understand their forest, and see that I work together with the people, because that is the only way they will give me the trust that I can bring this large equipment onto their land.“
For real Black Forest farmers, it is a matter of honor to manage their forest themselves, but there is no alternative to the harvester in this situation.
Narrator: Now the monoculture of non-native spruces is taking its toll. Nevertheless, the forester is enthusiastic about his new area of operation. He speaks of the wonderful landscape that one can fall in love with. As much strength as nature gives, the people here also have that much energy.
Forester: „It hurts that the forest is dying away like this.“
Narrator: The felled wood hardly generates any revenue anymore, especially because it is mostly of inferior quality. It is being dumped in China, or the owner even has to pay extra just to get rid of it.
Forester: „There is also the forest protection situation. Wood must be transported out as quickly as possible. But that doesn’t work that quickly, especially when there are no sales markets. Then fresh beetle-infested wood lies at the roadsides, and that doesn’t help either.“
Narrator: However, many foresters also see an opportunity in this situation.
Forester: „The larch is now a test, which is why I have planted them in large numbers. Insights that I have gathered so far: planting an area is a very high investment.“
Narrator: He has planted some trees himself and also lets trees that grow naturally stand.
Citizen: „I haven’t planted. I didn’t dare because I am worried that it will dry out.“
Narrator: His area is a model/research project so that others can benefit from the results. Simply leaving deadwood standing â that doesn’t bring a profit, but it could work. The most important factor for the forest was and still is humanity.
Forester: „Humans have used the forest so intensively that a catastrophe has emerged. It takes a while until it is forgotten; we have to keep saying it. Thinking into the future â we are just starting that now. We don’t have any other choice.“
Due to the drought, the safety situation has also worsened â another construction site so that citizens are not endangered by falling trees. I could occupy myself with this all day long.
Narrator: There is help for that now. A specially trained team locates dangerous trees. However, the forester himself is responsible for the deforestation. In an emergency, the forest owner is liable. Detecting dangerous trees is more difficult than people think.
Forester: „It requires climbers and helicopters for that; these are very high costs. I have great problems conveying this to the forest owners as well.“
Narrator: The forester is also a climate protection officer.
Forester: „Forest is climate protection. Whoever doesn’t know that, I tell them. That is raising awareness. What we perhaps haven’t focused on quite as much in recent years: what we see in the forest is only the effect of how we move as a society in space. What we do daily simply affects the forest.“
Narrator: This family has planted a whole cleared area with trees that hopefully will survive a few degrees more. A piece of wild cherry, a piece of sweet chestnut, in between silver fir. Previously 80 to 90 percent spruce, 10 percent fir, and a few beeches.
Forest Owner: „My father drove in with the water barrel every three weeks. If he hadn’t done that, it probably wouldn’t be as green. Wood is one of the most beautiful construction and raw materials, even in the future. Douglas fir is safe because one doesn’t know what is coming. We said we would take more tree species: sweet chestnut, black walnut, wild cherry, and silver fir. I believe the forest of the future is equipped with that.“
Forester: „It can only go upwards, and I want to take the forest owners with me. It is very important to me that we get young growth. And that we first look at the ground: what is actually coming up there?“
